What do you need an NIE for?

Spain asks for a genuine economic, professional or social reason. This decides which proof you'll need.

Where are you based right now?

This decides whether you'd apply in Spain, at a consulate, or through a representative.

Do you already have an appointment?

A cita previa at a police station in Spain, or an appointment at a Spanish consulate.

Not having one is normal — most people don't. It's the part we're most often asked to take over.

Can you attend in person?

Either you attend, or a representative attends for you under a power of attorney. Someone has to be there. That part isn't optional in Spain.
